QUESTION: Do you have any advice for parents about how to talk a their child about their illness, or about their treatment?

KATE: Typically the families know what to share and what not to share. Sometimes it's a little bit more than what the kids can handle, but we try not to hide so much from the kids, because they're part of it- they should be part of the treatment. When they get to a certain age, they should be part of the treatment, where they start to understand that the illness has effects on them, and what they can do to make it better and what they can do to make it worse. And I say worse- going out with their friends and having six slices of pizza or something might put them over the edge. But that should be something that's identified, and have them be part of the plan.
