Leslie B. Smoot, MD, Staff Cardiologist at Children's Hospital Boston responded to the following question:

Do you have recommendations on how parents can work best with you?

• Try to be as honest and direct as possible.

• Try to state your fears, so they can be addressed.

• Try to believe we are on the same team, even if it doesn't always feel that way.

• Know that most of us are doing our best to improve your child's quality of life.

• Advocate for your child, but try to remember that we work in a complex and stressful environment. There are many sick children with a variety of needs, and sometimes the needs outweigh the resources.
