Interviewer: Do you have any advice for other parents of children with asthma?
Mother: Well I would tell any parent-because I know where I live in the city, I live in the urban part of the city, low-income, and I don't want parents to be afraid. A lot of the children affected with asthma is due to their environment, not just outdoors/indoors-if you live in an environment where you have dampness in your home, where you have carpeting, try to make a change. Try to change for your child. I know a lot of adults who have asthma also and say "Well, we'll be fine." No, that's not necessarily true. It's very important that you, as a parent, advocate for your child and your family. If you feel as though that you're not getting the support you need, the hospitals will give you support-they have asthma clinics. Call the doctor and say, "Well, I do have questions, and I would like your assistance, and if you can't help me can you please direct me to someone that can?" That's very important. Like I said earlier, it's how you live, it's the things you can do. But you have to stay involved. That's the biggest thing.
